We’ve all got that mate who looks like they’ve been on holiday about 100% of the time. You know, the instagram friend whose handle might as well be @hotdoglegs and the facebook feed that consists of boastful tripe such as broad landscapes and images of desert island beaches captioned, ‘my view from the office’. Well guess what social media alum: nobody cares about your perfect life… but we are all jealous and now we need to holiday. Here’s some travel inspo, including how to Instagram foodporn to make all your fans jealous.
Machu Picchu/The Inca Trail: Peru
If the Inca Trail isn’t on your travel hit list, it should be. Set high above the Andes, the history behind the ancient city is still unclear to historians. If you hate long walks anywhere, this one isn’t for you — you’ll endure a massive hike to reach Machu Picchu, but man is it worth the trek.
You’ll need around 4,000 calories to refuel on your return to civilisation and ceviche is a pretty good start. It’s basically Peru’s unofficial national dish and it’s full of seafood.
The Wave: Southern Utah, USA
The only wave (like an actual wave) in the world made of sandstone attracts every type of tourist with an instagram end-game. From the ‘I changed my life at Burning Man’ traveller to newly engaged couples looking for the perfect announcement picture. If that’s not enough of a reason to visit, apparently the people of Utah love a good old bowl of Jell-O. Obviously you can’t go wrong with a cheeseburger in the States… if Jell-O doesn’t quite satisfy.
Ha Long Bay: Vietnam
If you visit North Vietnam and don’t stop off at Halong Bay, then you’re doing it all wrong. Labelled one of the seven natural wonders of the world, it should be on your bucket list. Taking a trip on one of the many overnight boat cruise tours is the best way to take in the beauty of the bay. After all, the 1600 floating islands aren’t going to Snapchat themselves.
You don’t need us to tell you that Vietnamese food is everything. It’s obviously even better in its homeland than it is in Oz. Grab a Pho Bo Vien or Banh Mi and you can’t go wrong — you can order some tasty ones here to compare.
Translates literally as ‘Troll’s Tongue’. What else do we need to say to convince you? Reaching the top is a pretty epic and lengthy hike but the view is jaw dropping. Expect scenery worthy of a perfect tinder profile backdrop.
Fresh fish is a definite go to when you’re on Norwegian shores. Salmon has become a staple and we highly recommend Røkt Laks. If you’re after something a little meatier, give fårikål a go. It’s a traditional mutton stew and it’s delicious. Sorry, veggos.
Whitehaven Beach: Australia
Why leave the country when we play refuge to what is essentially paradise on Earth. It’s 7km long and blessed with 98% pure silica sand- meaning it remains cool even when it’s 40 degrees outside. We don’t need to tell you what to eat when you’re there because you can never go wrong with an Aussie Barbecue and as many cold beers as you can carry. You can do the same thing in the city and pick it up rather than grill yourself.
Pizza. Pasta. Gelato. You shouldn’t need any further reasons to visit Venice then these 3 but if you do, there is some incredible architecture to explore. Travel by Gondola and give the term treat yoself a whole new meaning. Then be sure to indulge in as much Pizza, Pasta, Gelato as you can (in any order, we won’t judge).
Sagrada Família: Barcelona
When Gaudi took on this project back in 1883, he probably didn’t expect work to still be going on today. This holy feat of architecture is a man made wonder worth visiting.
Take a siesta and refuel with Escudella, a traditional Catalan stew filled with meat, beans and potatoes. Fideuà is also a pretty good shout for seafood fans: similar to paella but served with short noodles rather than rice.
Amer Fort: Rajasthan, India
This Indian Palace was built in the 16th Century and is a total wonder. It’s so widely acknowledged as a feat for pre-industrial humanity, it features on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Laas Maas will suit you if you’re into spice. Mawa Kachori is a puff pastry filled with fruits and will satisfy your sweet tooth.
