We’ve enjoyed it for over 500 years. No food lovers, not jellied eel pie (that’s lit a thing in London), we’re talking about pizza. Pizza is the air we breathe, the love of our lives. Here’s an ode to pizza, with some of the most revolutionary moments in its life so far.
1600 – flatbread dish referred to as ‘pizza’ first documented in Naples
The most important ever dispute among historians is when pizza actually started. Greek societies made flatbread with ingredients on top, back in the 700’s, but it didn’t quite become pizza until the 17th Century in Naples.
1889 – queen margherita gives the margherita pizza royal status
Accordingly, when Queen Margherita of Italy requested a ‘poor man’s’ pizza for dinner. She chooses between three kinds of pizza, and is astounded by the taste of the one with Italian colours (mozzarella, tomato and basil). Pizza can now be considered royal. She proceeded to give it a royal title.
1943 – americans start claiming they invented pizza, as the pan pizza is created
When the thick Pan Pizza was introduced in Chicago, the Italian heritage seemed to be fade by the minute. But only in the States, we got you Italy. Really though, Evelyne Slomon, editor of Pizza Today, wrote: “The pizza is a symbol for the American dream.” Okay then.
1945 – international breakthrough when discovered by allied troops after ww2
This was the big break for little pizza. Allied troops stationed in Italy spread the word after finding the dish while stationed during the second world war. A few years later, pizza had become a household staple across Europe, and chains like Pizza Hut and Dominos began to dominate on an international scale.
1962 – pizza hawaii is invented. everyone divided forever
Greek-Canadian Sam Panopoulos divided friends and broke up families when he introduced us to the undeniably delicious pineapple pizza. He was supposedly inspired by Chinese sweet & salty foods.
1974 – first pizza ordered using a computer
Ordering pizza to your home started to be a thing, and with technological breakthroughs, one of the first things people realised they needed to do was order pizza by clicking a button. Thank god for that.
2012 – world’s largest pizza created in rome
Guinness World Records records a pizza in Rome standing at 1,200m². That’s the size of a hockey rink. The five chefs responsible knead the dough in 5,234 separate batches over a 48 hour period. They gave most of the pizza to food shelters in Rome, making it a absolutely worthwhile.
2014 – foodora delivers its first pizza
In 2014, the first pink rider ever set out on an adventure to deliver the first pizza, breaking typical colour stereotypes and ensuring people can eat pizza whenever they want, wherever they want, forever more.
2016 – first 3d printed pizza is made
The future started to feel like it was actually approaching at full speed with the latest 3D printing technology. The Silicon Valley start-up BeeHex created a pizza using a machine.
2017 – naples’ pizza gain unesco heritage recognition
We end up where we started; in Naples. Life is a blessed circle, just like pizza.
In late 2017, UNESCO awarded the traditional ‘twirling’ technique used in Naples, in the category of intangible cultural heritage. They deserve every pizza award they ever receive.
